French act Igorrr is the brainchild of Gautier Serre that, since forming in 2005, delivers music that changes genres withe every twist and turn. Here’s why this music act has heavy rotation in my streams.
Firstly, it’s only fitting that an artist that released an EP called Baroqucore needs to be featured on The Hard Baroquer.
Secondly Igorrr’s combination of death metal, folk opera and electronic music makes them more avant-garde metal and grindcore than progressive metal. But the creativity and passion that goes into the group’s output can’t be denied – it’s meticulously thought out and influences showcased in their songs are well researched – a necessity given the scale of ambition the group showcases.
Igorrr’s music will showcase rage-filled screams, soaring opera sopranos, blast beats and on occasion 8-bit and accordions – tracks like Houmous and Cheval are shining examples of this.
According to their website, influences in their music will range from: Meshuggah to Chopin, Cannibal Corpse to Bach; as well as the likes of Domenico Scarlatti, Taraf de Haidouks and Aphex Twin. Such combinations should be sacriligious, and yet, here I am, enthralled by their latest single, Downgrade Desert of their most recent album, ‘Distortion and Spirituality‘.
The music is as crazy as such a wide range of influences could be, and fans of Mr Bungle will no doubt enjoy exploring Igorrr’s back catalogue, and seeing how not easily digestible music can still be highly creative and rewarding to listen to.
Gautier Serre’s guitar
Gautier Serre plays a custom built guitar by Wild Custom Guitars. The guitar’s resembles a post-apocalyptic instrument and suits his music style. You can see the guitar in action in the music video for the track ueiD.
Serre also plays a Fender Jaguar guitar, which he uses in the track Houmous, visible in the ‘Making of Savage Sinusoid’ video below.

Igorrr’s live performances are notable for their high energy and theatricality; faithfully recreating the expereince of listening to their records. The group tour Europe and the US regularly playing at festivals and in concert. For obvious reasons, the group’s full band 2020 European tour has been postponed to 2021 which will see perform 31 shows across Europe.
